Telco Systems Answers the Need for Cost-effective Migration to Packet Backhaul

Migration to next-gen wireless networks includes industry leading synchronization,
interface and management options

Mansfield, MA, June 29, 2010 – Telco Systems, a BATM company (LSE: BVC) and a leading provider of Carrier Ethernet access and aggregation solutions, is enabling carriers and wireless operators to create robust and cost effective packet backhaul networks without replacing their heavily invested core networks. As integral parts of the Company’s access to aggregation packet backhaul solution, the new T-Marc 3208SH cell site gateway and T-Metro 7124S 10G multi-service aggregation switch will allow carriers and wireless operators to seamlessly backhaul traffic from multiple 2G, 3G and 4G cell sites across a Carrier Ethernet access network.

“One of the main concerns carriers have is maintaining proper synchronization while the standards and base station equipment evolve. No one can afford a complete forklift upgrade,” stated Nir Daube, vice president of product management at Telco Systems. “Because our solution is purpose-built for wireless backhaul, we can help the carrier migrate their network piece by piece, without touching the core of the network, where major investments have been made over the past few years, and without cannibalizing current voice services.”

The T-Marc 3208SH cell site gateway and T-Metro 7124S 10G multiservice aggregation switch have been developed specifically for packet backhaul, creating a powerful solution focused on solving the challenges of migrating to 3G and 4G services and integrating support for legacy TDM-based services. To complete the Company’s overall comprehensive wireless backhaul strategy, a soon-to-be-released service management system will further ease the deployment, configuration and planning of the network and will enable carriers to monitor and maintain these solutions without major investments in operational training.

Both devices support interworking of multiple synchronization options - Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE), IEEE 1588v2, external clock and phase source via BITS interfaces to backhaul data and voice traffic from the Node-B\BTS\eNodeB to the core network over Ethernet/MPLS. "By enabling interworking between different clocking schemes across the access network, cellular operators can be assured that traffic is maintaining its appropriate time stamp throughout the network, starting at the cell site through the aggregation point," Daube continued.

The T-Marc 3208SH cell site gateway is temperature-hardened for use in uncontrolled environments and supports eight Gigabit Ethernet interfaces and four dual-speed (100/1000) Ethernet plug-in (SFP) ports. Two expansion slots are available for optional CES capabilities to allow a cost-effective migration from 3G to 4G and beyond.

The T-Metro 7124S aggregation switch supports up to 24 Gigabit connections supports extended temperature ranges for use in uncontrolled environments. One expansion slot is available for optional CES aggregation or 10G capabilities to allow a cost-effective migration from 3G to 4G and beyond.

Both devices support a wide variety of features including pseudowire / TDM emulation using Circuit Emulation Services (CES), MPLS, Ethernet OAM and H-QoS. This combination of technologies provides tremendous bandwidth scalability and advanced traffic management required for migration to high bandwidth HSPA+, WiMAX and LTE services. By supporting CES and MPLS-based Layer 2 fiber aggregation capabilities, the solution can create a reliable Metro Ethernet extension for leased line replacement and provide access to advanced data services such as virtual private LAN services (VPLS), virtual private wire services (VPWS) and IP virtual private network (IPVPN) services to support revenue-generating business services.

Both products are currently in beta testing and will be available during the third quarter of this year.
